Episode #6: Bring the Weather

Hey what’s up!

In today’s episode, we’ll be discussing a phrase that my old boss would say before we had a meeting with another company, or with any external party. It was a simple phrase, but always resonated with the team: “Bring the weather!”

The key notion behind this line is that we always take our own weather with us. We are responsible for creating the environment around us—its energy, its emotional qualities, its positivity or negativity, and its happiness or misery.

It took me a little bit of time to realize whether this was true, but when I did realize it, it was very apparent. When someone walks into the room, people notice.

The tone, mood, presence, focus, and behavior of that person is the weather in the situation. Everyone who is in attendance can see it, experience it, and describe how it impacts how they’re feeling. They can describe if that persons weather lifts them up, or brings them down. In a business meeting, someone who brings sunshine results in people wanting to relax, contribute, and take risks. Someone who brings the rain will result in people wanting to remain cautious, reserved, and careful.

When we bring the weather, we define to a large degree how the other people around us feel. Whether you’re a dentist bringing the sunshine to a patient who is afraid of going to the dentist, or a swim coach who is teaching a crying toddler how to swim. The attitude and energy you bring will impact their experience.

Similar to how we get frustrated when the meteorologist gets the weather wrong, it can be frustrating for those around us to be experiencing the unpredictability of our weather. One day we bring the sun, the next day we bring the rain, or maybe we bring all four seasons in one day!

Let’s make the effort to determine our weather as a person. Unlike the weather forecasters, we have complete control over this.

Looks like a sunny week ahead for those around me in Chicago!
